Private Residential, Hendra

Category : Residential

We were fortunate to be the preferred consultants on this project.  The house is a glorious sprawling villa situated on a large site in the inner northern suburbs of Brisbane.  What excited us about this project was that the largely original condition of the property.  The relationship between house and garden was strong and we were brought onto the project early.  This meant we were able to collaborate with the architect from the onset to ensure that the connection between house and garden was optimised.

The Client's Brief

The clients had a good understanding of the unique character of their property and were keen to preserve it.  The landscape design needed to enhance the history of the property while also providing for the needs of a busy modern family.  Meetings on the veranda with the architect, the clients and ourselves proved to be a very effective forum for galvanising design options.

Our brief was essentially to redesign the outdoor spaces that connected to the internal living areas of the house.

A kidney shaped swimming pool with clay pavers around provided our first challenge.  We celebrated the curves of the pool by introducing a rendered feature retaining wall with a seat formed into it.  Large format custom cut stone coping and refurbishment of the pool lining above the water line proved to be an economical transformation of the classic 50's inspired pool shape.

The existing palms had to go and were replaced with sculptural native plants and coastal groundcovers, giving a comfortable and familiar 'beach' feel to the pool area.  A frameless glass pool fence and recycled timber pool shelter and day bed made the pool a far more inviting place to be.

A large stand alone timber deck with recycled timber overhead beams made for a formal entertainment area with sweeping views over classic lawns and new screen planting on the boundaries.  Ornamental native trees were selected based on appropriate scale and character.

The existing clay pavers were replaced with a lightly sandblasted concrete exposing a contrasting aggregate integrating the paths and courtyards and providing a new crisp look to the hard areas.  Carefully planned saw cuts ensured visual interest and planting areas where incorporated in the slab to ensure vertical elements and colour at key points.
